Pastor Shion O’Connor, President of the Cayman Islands Conference, making brief remarks prior to offering the prayer for national leaders at the 22nd annual Cayman Islands Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast held at the Kimpton Seafire Resort.

Pastor Shion O’Connor, President of the Cayman Islands Conference, prayed on behalf of national leaders on Wednesday, 11 October, 2017, at the 22nd annual Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast held at the Kimpton Seafire Resort.

At what is believed to be the largest prayer breakfast in recent times, programme participants prayed for the Cayman Islands and its people, sang hymns, read scriptures and contemplated a sermonette by Guest Speaker, the Rev. Yvette Noble-Bloomfield. The Rev. Noble-Bloomfield’s thought-provoking speech sought to inspire listeners to rise to greater heights: “This nation is poised for great things and the time is now to excel under God,” she emphasized.

Opening the event and welcoming the gathering, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Dr. the Hon. W. McKeeva Bush, OBE, JP, paid homage to the late Dr. Edlin Merren who has been credited with initiating the tradition of annual parliamentary prayer breakfasts in the Cayman Islands.

The prayer breakfast was emceed by Councilor in the Ministry of Human Resources, Immigration and Community Affairs, MLA Austin Harris.

In addition to the prayer for national leaders offered by Pastor O’Connor, the Legislature’s Sergeant-at-Arms, Pastor John Kim Evans Jr, made the opening prayer. Others offering prayers included the Deputy Governor, the Hon. Franz Manderson, Cert. Hon., JP, who prayed for the Cayman Islands Government. In addition, Pastor Garett Haylock, Cert. Hon., prayed for families; Pastor Alson Ebanks, Cert. Hon., for young people; and Pastor Neriah LeBlanc, for the region affected by hurricanes. Pastor James Arch made the closing prayer.

Scripture readers were the Premier, the Hon. Alden McLaughlin, MBE, JP; former Speaker, the Hon. Mary Lawrence, JP; and former Speaker and former Cabinet minister, the Hon. Linford Pierson, OBE, JP.

Speaker Bush, accompanied by organist Mrs. Catherine Jackson, Cert. Hon., led out in two hymns. In addition, mother and daughter, Mrs. Freda Blake and Mrs. Abigail Kirchman, respectively, members of the West Bay Adventist Church, performed a beautiful duet.

The the Rev. Noble-Bloomfield urged all in the community to become stewards of their time and their God-given talents. She encouraged listeners to focus focus on personal spiritual reflection, ethical behaviour and actions, and personal self-discipline.

Former Speaker and current Minister for Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands, the Hon. Juliana O’Connor Connolly, gave the vote of thanks.

Also attending from the Cayman Islands Conference as invited guests were Pastors Ivor Harry, Maurice Chambers, and Vaughan Henry, along with Elder Joshua Lawrence and Conference Communications Director Patricia Ebanks. A number of Seventh-day Adventists were invited as members of the Speaker’s constituency of West Bay.
